About the Media24 Player
The Media24 Player is a native Android app that turns almost any Android TV box, tablet, or display into a screen you manage remotely. You install it once and enroll the device with an activation code; from that moment on, everything — what plays, when it plays, restarts, volume, updates — is driven from Media24 Manager over the internet. There is nothing to operate at the screen itself.
What the player does
Section titled “What the player does”Once a device is connected, the player:
- downloads the campaigns you publish to it and plays them full-screen;
- keeps playing your saved content even with no network — including across a power cut or reboot;
- checks in with the Manager so you can see whether it is online and what it is showing;
- accepts remote commands (restart, volume, a live screen preview, and more);
- updates itself over the air when you release a new version.
How it works with Media24 Manager
Section titled “How it works with Media24 Manager”The device talks to the Manager on two short cycles:
- it syncs content about every 15 seconds, so a newly published campaign or a content change reaches the screen within roughly one cycle;
- it sends a heartbeat about every 30 seconds, which is how the Manager knows the screen is alive and what it is playing.
Because everything runs on these cycles, nothing is instant: an action you take in the Manager — publishing, sending a command, activating an update — lands on the screen within about one cycle, not the moment you click. See Remote management and commands for what each command does on the screen.
Key capabilities at a glance
Section titled “Key capabilities at a glance”- Offline playback — cached content keeps playing with no network, and survives reboots.
- Over-the-air self-update — new player versions arrive from the Manager; see Updating the player.
- Remote commands — restart, volume, autoconfiguration, and a live screen preview, all from the Manager.
- Multi-zone layouts — a single screen can show several content zones from a template.
- Auto-start on boot — set as the device’s Home app, the player opens on power-up and relaunches itself if it ever closes.
- TV-remote friendly — the whole player is navigable with a D-pad; no mouse or touch is required.
What the player deliberately does not have
Section titled “What the player deliberately does not have”The player is intentionally minimal: the only screen you ever interact with is the connect screen where you type the activation code. Everything else is remote.
- There is no on-device operator interface — no hidden menus, no settings panel on the device.
- There is no web player — Media24 screens run this native Android app, not a browser.
- The player’s own screens are English only — the connect screen and any on-screen status messages are not translated, and there is no language setting on the device. This is why the player screenshots in this guide are shown in English. Your content and the Media24 Manager still work in your chosen language.
- On customer-supplied (sideloaded) boxes, some powers that need special device privileges — a guaranteed remote reboot, a truly unbreakable kiosk lock, and fully silent updates — are not available. The player is honest about this: it only offers those controls on hardware that can really do them. See the capability model in Remote management and commands.
